Task 4
Lots of wind,
about 15-25kts SE in the morning, and a cooler day, base of around 4000ft.
Task was straight line downwind to Wongan Hills 78km.
The quite gusty windy conditions meant lots of people leaving the paddock low
and a few electing not to fly at all.
Conditions were scratchy, but the wind meant those who scratched well got a long
way, at least until about 4 when the wind got even stronger from the south.
Murray Wood made it to within 500m of goal when the wind got him, and planted
him on top of a 5m high hay stack. No injuries to himself but the glider
sustained some damage, and both were able to get down with help from a forklift.
Paul Blachford continued his good form, 2nd for the day with 63km,
Mole was 3rd followed by Gordon Marshall and Dave
Wellington all a few km apart.
Lots of pilots on high performance gliders landed vertically when the wind
picked up. 11 pilots made it out of the 10km bombout
zone and almost everyone who launched was blown at least 1 paddock downwind.
In the comp overall Murray Wood has taken the lead with 1041 points just
ahead of mole on 1035 and Dave Wellington on 1003 with
top novice Paul Blachford in 4th place with 933 points.
Dick Speeds Offspring have taken a commanding lead in the teams comp with 213
points, CMFs have slipped to 2nd with 160 points while
Goldfields Dustdevils close in with 158.
Thermal Dynamics continue to battle with Has Beens for last place with a
measly 112 points.
