Task 4

Today was a day of high drama in many ways. After setting up on the easterly strips it became apparent that it was going to be tough getting the field away. The window was closed and everybody moved back to the south-easterly strips. Thanks to the Sky Sports trailer the move only took about 30 minutes.

The task was revised to a 97km down-winder to Ballidu. Cu's were forming at high altitude which had everybody licking their lips in anticipation. Getting out of the paddock proved to be easy for some and tough for others. The first 2 thermals saw about 8 pilots spiral out at 800 up. Phil Knight and Karl Ruckriegel climbed the sunny side of a cloud all the way to 8500 feet. Many other pilots took 4 or 5 tows to depart and had to settle for 200-300 up thermals.

Jon Durand gave everybody a huge fright when he locked out on aero tow, slamming into the ground hard and knocking himself unconscious.  After a few hours in hospital he was released sporting some cuts and scratches to his nose and cheek.

Meanwhile the rest of the field was out on course, many struggling in light lift after reaching the Cowcowing Lakes. Eventually smiles abounded with half the field making goal including Ivy, an Intermediate pilot flying a well-worn Xtralite.

Gary Wright left the paddock at 4:20pm and still got the fastest time! Phil Wainwright made a welcome return to form also getting a sub-two hour time and finishing second for the day. Dave Wellington won the day with a good course time and an early departure.

It turned out that there would be no more tasks this comp due to the development of Cyclone Graeme off the North West coast.
