Stay secure. Stay compliant.

Keep pace with evolving SMB1001 requirements

SMB1001 is a cyber security standard designed for small and medium businesses, providing a structured framework for strengthening cyber security practices, improving resilience and demonstrating that cyber risk is being managed appropriately.

For businesses already certified, it also provides a practical benchmark for maintaining and improving security as threats, technology and compliance expectations evolve.

From 2027, Incident Response becomes an increasingly important part of SMB1001 compliance. At Level 3 (Gold), businesses are required to have an Incident Response Plan and undertake annual training or testing, including at least one tabletop exercise, with outcomes recorded and the plan updated. Requirements become more comprehensive at Levels 4 and 5, including additional scenarios, communications planning and more advanced response exercises.

Whether your business is already certified or preparing for certification, IQPC can help ensure your Incident Response arrangements continue to meet the standard in practice, from developing and reviewing plans to running tabletop exercises, identifying gaps and keeping your response processes current.

How IQPC Cyber Incident Response Works

1. Prepare

Put the right foundations in place before an incident occurs. IQPC can help develop or review your Incident Response Plan, define roles and decision authority, establish escalation paths, confirm key contacts, plan communications and run tabletop exercises so your business knows what to do when something goes wrong.

2. Assess

Understand what has happened, when it started, which users or systems may be affected and what the immediate risk is.

3. Contain

Take action to stop further access or damage. Depending on the incident, this could include securing accounts, revoking sessions, isolating devices or restricting access.

4. Investigate

Determine how the incident occurred, how far it has spread and what systems, accounts or information may have been affected.

5. Recover

Restore safe access, recover data or systems where required and help the business return to normal operations.

6. Strengthen

Review what happened and recommend practical improvements to reduce the chance or impact of a similar incident occurring again.

Be ready before an incident puts your business to the test

Whether you need to strengthen your cyber Incident Response Plan, run a tabletop exercise or respond to an active or suspected incident, IQPC can help.

Incident Response support tailored to what your business needs

The support you need will depend on what has happened, the systems involved and the level of risk. IQPC can assist with situations such as:

  • Email, Microsoft 365 / Entra and Business Email Compromise
  • Ransomware, malware and other active cyber incidents
  • Compromised endpoints, servers or devices
  • Suspicious access or potential data exposure
  • Post-incident investigation, remediation and recovery

IQPC works with you to understand the situation and determine the right scope of support. Rather than fixed packages, our Incident Response approach is flexible and tailored to your environment, risk and immediate priorities.

What businesses are actually experiencing

Real-world signs, risks and lessons from cyber incidents

The incidents we see most often

Business Email Compromise, compromised Microsoft 365 or Entra accounts and suspicious authentication activity are common. IQPC also responds to compromised server environments, malware and ransomware incidents.

The first sign is often subtle

An incident does not always begin with a major alert. Unexpected MFA prompts, unusual email activity, suspicious logins, security alerts or a client reporting a strange message can all be early warning signs.

One compromised account can go much further

Email and identity compromises are often underestimated. A single account can provide access to email, files, cloud applications, contacts and other connected systems.

Fixing the symptom is not the same as resolving the incident

Changing one password or addressing the obvious issue may not be enough. Delayed escalation, deleted evidence or failing to check related sessions and credentials can leave important risks unresolved.

Access can remain after a password change

Attackers may still have active sessions or have made configuration changes that continue to provide access. Investigation may need to review tokens, MFA settings, inbox rules, application consent and other activity.

You do not need all the answers before calling

If something does not look right, involve the right people early. You do not need to know exactly what happened before contacting IQPC, understanding that is part of the investigation. Early action usually gives you more options.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

I think one email account has been hacked. Is that really an incident?

Yes. Even one compromised account can potentially expose email, contacts, files or connected services. It may also be used to target other staff, customers or suppliers, so it is worth investigating early.

Can IQPC tell whether data has actually been accessed?

Often, IQPC can build a useful picture from available audit, authentication, endpoint, email, firewall and security logs. How much can be determined depends on what logging was enabled and how long those records have been retained.

Where formal forensic analysis or evidentiary certainty is required, IQPC can work with a specialist Digital Forensics and Incident Response (DFIR) provider.

Can you recover encrypted or deleted data?

Potentially. Recovery depends on the nature of the incident and the backups or recovery points available. IQPC can assess the available options and determine whether affected systems or data can be safely restored, but recovery cannot always be guaranteed.

What if we don't currently use IQPC for IT support?

That’s fine. IQPC provides Incident Response support to both new and existing Perth businesses. For new clients, we’ll first understand what has happened, the environment involved and the support required before establishing the appropriate scope of work.

Do we need an Incident Response Plan if we already have security tools?

Yes. Technology is only one part of Incident Response. A good plan establishes who makes decisions, who can authorise containment, how incidents are escalated, who contacts insurers or advisers, how communications will work if normal systems are unavailable, and how recovery decisions will be made.

IQPC’s approach also separates the business decisions management needs to make from IQPC’s technical responsibilities.

Do we need to test our Incident Response Plan?

Yes. A plan should be reviewed and tested rather than created once and filed away. Tabletop exercises can expose gaps in responsibilities, communication, escalation and technical readiness before a real incident occurs.

SMB1001:2027 also introduces annual Incident Response exercise requirements from Level 3 upwards.

What happens during a tabletop exercise?

A tabletop exercise works through a realistic cyber incident scenario with the people who would be involved in the response. As the scenario develops, the team considers questions such as who needs to be contacted, who makes decisions, when systems should be isolated, how staff would communicate and when insurers or customers may need to be involved.

The purpose is to identify missing information, unclear responsibilities and practical gaps before a real incident puts the plan to the test.

Will we need to notify our clients if there has been a breach?

It depends on what occurred, what information was affected and your contractual or regulatory obligations. IQPC can help establish the technical facts, while legal, privacy and regulatory decisions should involve the appropriate advisers.

Under Australia’s Notifiable Data Breaches scheme, some breaches involving personal information may require notification to affected individuals and the OAIC.

Can IQPC deal with our cyber insurer?

Yes. IQPC can work alongside your insurer and any providers they appoint during an incident. It is generally important to involve your insurer early where relevant, as policies may include reporting requirements or require particular providers or approvals.

How long does Incident Response normally take?

There is no standard timeframe. A relatively simple account compromise may be contained quickly, while incidents involving multiple systems, ransomware, data exposure or significant recovery work may continue for days or longer.

The first priority is understanding what has happened and containing the immediate risk.

How much does Incident Response cost?

There is no fixed price because every incident is different. IQPC will first understand what has happened, which systems are affected and what support is required before establishing an appropriate scope and quote.
